Javed Akhtar is one of the 's topmost lyricist and writer. He had done lots of poetry in Hindi and Urdu language. Javed was a part of Salim-Javed writers' pair. The duos had written scripts for many successful movies in 1970s and 1980s. Their work includes films like Haathi Mere Saathi, Deewar, Sholay, Zanjeer, Kala Pathahr, etc. Javed had won many awards as Best Lyricist including Filmfare and National Award. Also the Government of India honored him with Padma Shri (1999) and Padma Bhushan (2007).

Javed Akhtar was born on 17th January, 1945 in Gwalior (MP, ). Javed was born into a typical writer family. Seven generations of his family are in the writers filed. His father Jan Nisar Akhtar was a famous songwriter and Urdu poet. His mother Safia Akhtar was a teacher and writer. Also her mother's brother Majaz was one of the respected Urdu poets. His grandfather Muzter Khairabadi was like a milestone in Urdu poetry.

Javed was first named as Jadoo. The word was taken from his father Jan Nisar's poet- 'Lamba, Lamba Kisi Jadoo Ka Fasaana Hoga'. But later he was renamed with the name Javed, which sounds like Jadoo.

Javed moved from Gwalior to Lucknow along with family. He lost his mother at very young age. Young Javed didn't get his father's company as well. Because of work his father had to make many visits from Bombay to Lucknow . Javed Akhtar attended Colvin Taluqdars' College in Lucknow for schooling. Later he moved to Aligarh at his maternal aunt's place, where he attended Minto Circle School . Javed did his graduation in B. A. from Saifiya College , Bhopal .

During his college days, he was used to participate in the debate competitions, where he turns out as winner many times. He had won the Rotary Club Prize as a best debater for many times.

In 1964, Javed moved to the dream land of India- Mumbai . During his early career he worked as a dialogue writer in minor films, He was also worked as an assistant.

He got his first break in Hindi Film Industry with the film 'Seeta aur Geeta'. He later found a good chemistry with writer Salim Khan. The duo worked as team Salim-Javed. Salim Khan is father of Bollywood actors Salman Khan, Arbaz Khan and Sohail Khan. Salim-Javed together gave many hits like Haathi Mere Saathi, Deewar, Sholay, Zanjeer, and Kala Pathahr. But they split in 1981 due to some differences.

Javed started working independently since his split with Salim. He moved on to give beautiful scripts with the films like Betaab, Saagar, and Arjun. He also had scripted for son Farhan Khan's films Lakshya (2004) and Don: The Chase Begins Again (2006). The writer also had done screenplay writing and dialogue writing. Later he turned as lyricist. He had won many prestigious awards as Best Lyricist. His songs are rhythmic and reflective on life. Javed recently penned lyrics for films Don (2006), Namastey London (2007), and Jodhaa Akbar (2007).

Javed Akhtar recently appeared as a judge alongside Udit Narayan, Alisha Chinai and Anu Malik on Sony TV's reality show 'Indian Idol 3 (2007)'. He has also judged Sony TV's another reality show 'Fame Gurukul (2005)' alongside K.K. and Shankar Mahadevan. The writer is also on the advisory board of Asian Academy Of Film And Television.

Javed married Honey Irani and together they have one son called Farhan and one daughter called Zoya. Farhan is the most young and leading director in Bollywood. Honey Irani is also a writer. Javed met Honey on the sets of 'Seeta aur Geeta'. But they later get divorced.

 Javed now married to Shabana Azmi. Shabana Azmi is a popular Hindi cinema actress. She is a daughter of famous poet, Kaifi Azmi.
